At the Roundabout, Up the Garden Path

When you live in a small town there is always a little bit of gossip mixed in with local news. The best place in my town to find out what the go is on any given topic is at the local Quilt Shop. And so it is each Thursday morning that a group of us gather each week and stitch away whilst we catch up with the latest local news and swap stories about all sorts of interesting things. My golly I have learned a lot LOL. Everything from underwear to vegie gardening! Because there have been two other sewing circles in the week before Thursday, the news is so much more complete by the time our group meets! We laugh a lot and surprisingly, we do get some work done.

I'm nearly finished my homework from the last Quilt Class. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of hand piecing, but I was ever so wrong. It is so much more accurate and forgiving. The pieces seem to go together so much better for some reason. Yes it is more time consuming, but it also far more portable and so stitching is able to be done at times and in places where I would never drag my sewing machine along to! So above is my current block for this month.

Your block is beautiful! I like handstitching (the little that I've done it) for the same reason you do--it's portable. You can pop it right in your bag and go.

I continue to envy you your sewing circle, though I have found a woman at church who's helping me with my sewing, so that's a start.

Oh I wish you could both pop over and join me! I just know that you'd love the group. Sewing, food/recipes, laughter, stitching.

Good for the soul :)

Beautiful work, Tracy!! Does hand stitching hold up as good as machine stitching if you need to wash your quilt. I wouldn't think so. I would love to do a quilt but have not attempted that as yet.

Tracy, just a quick note, nothing about quilts, I reckon they will be way beyond me forever, but I just did a post about my first solo dinner party last night ... in another life my ex partner did all the catering if we had people to dinner. I "borrowed" one of your recipes and it worked a treat. Anyway, if you're interested, the full story is on my blog. Thanks.

John, I will definitely pop over and check that out!!!!

Dianne, apparently before the advent of machines, all hand piecing was done with a very fine running stitch and they hold up to 200 years of use providing the fabric is a solid one.

One of the teachers of my class brought in a quilt she'd just bought that was circa 1850's. It was stunning. The quilting was incredibly fine and the only damage was a fabric that had something other than cotton in it and it had eaten away the fabric itself.

Hi Tracy! Just had to pop in and say Hi. Things have been so crazy here, and I am SOOOOO behind on blog reading. I think your quilt block is just gorgeous, your hard work has paid off! I hope all is well with you, and I hope I will have more time to catch up on the latest soon! Thank you so much for all of your sweet comments on my blog. You just don't know how you have encouraged me.

Love and ((hugs)),

Love your Lemoyne Star block. I have spent many hours hand piecing and enjoy the gentler pass and the hush that accompanies it.

But I've got to ask about the felt flimsy that is tucked into your sewing tin. Is it a needle book opened flat? Would love to see additional photos.
